Living on campus again is a unique and fascinating experience, which leaves me filled with admiration. As I trudge home through inch-deep slurry, I often ask myself why they felt it necessary to build a university on land that is only ever a heavy rainfall away from being a swamp. It takes a special kind of mind to build a university on top of a lake when there are miles of empty, dry fields in every direction. And my kitchen-mates are a source of constant interest, especially with regards to the increasing levels of intra-kitchen pilfering: the guy who stole the pork chops really upped the ante, although you have to admire someone who steals milk from a 2-pint bottle marked "THIS IS NOT COMMUNAL MILK", when my own 4-pint bottle is sitting right next to it. That takes a certain style. I'm also amused at attempts to circumvent the university's fierce anti-marijuana stance (you can get kicked out of campus accommodation for using drugs of any kind, including pot). When I got back home this evening, there were an unusually large number of people apparently taking an evening constitutional, in a circular route around the residences. At 3am. In the bitter cold. With cigarettes. So props to the potheads making laps in the winter air just to get a hit: that takes dedication.
I love being at university.
