Useful discovery for today: turning emacs from "totally insane key mappings that it will take you weeks to learn" to "keys work exactly like every other editor in the world ever" involves a single setting in the config file. The home and end keys work! I can select by holding down shift! The joy of the simplicity of these actions isn't noticeable until they're taken away from you. I'm very fond of pointing out how terribly designed computers are; perhaps I've been overlooking that, really, there's quite a lot of good design in there too.
