A letter from a mother

I've already posted this letter from the mother of a gay son to her local newspaper in Vermont to delicious, but it's worth putting in as many places as possible. It's really brilliantly written. The phrase in particular that I wish every anti-gay religionist in America was required to read before opening their mouths ever again:
If you want to tout your own morality, you'd best come up with something more substantive than your heterosexuality. You did nothing to earn it; it was given to you.
I want this on a t-shirt. And a billboard. And written in the sky.

1) It sounds to me as though the mother's quote is coming out of a moral relativism. That is, each person wholly and completely defines their own set of morals and has no right to define (impose) their set of morals on another; hence, her comment that hetersexuality is no better than homosexuality. It is merely a personal choice. One must be careful with such a belief system. Do you think I have the right to smash your windshield? If not, then you've restricted my "freedom" by imposing your morals. The fact is, we have a common set of self-evident morals. The question is what to define as a part of that set.
2) It is interesting that she says "it was given to you". Does she mean biologically? Or, as it sounds to me, is she implying belief in a Creator who created each of us with an inherent sexuality (homo- or hetero-)? If so, then she believes that certain things are inherent in human life. I would argue that the inherent nature of sexuality is not evident so much in our emotional, mental or sexual disposition, but in the harder fact of our physicality. The fact is, genitalia have a purpose. They are meant to generate new life (notice the common root with genitalia). In a homosexual act, the bits 'n' pieces don't fit together, and their primary purpose is thwarted. Thus, the inherent sexuality of the individual is ignored. This does violence to a society because it separates the procreative nature of the sexual act from the pleasure and makes society lean toward a more hedonistic, me-myself-and-I culture.
