It's nearly Christmas. Do you feel Christmassy? Are you in debt yet? Are you stressed out? Or do you love this time of year? I'll let you know which camp I fall into after. But I went shopping today; what on earth am I going to get for everyone and how the hell am I going to afford it all? Erk.

Sadly, it looks like the web-enabled etch-a-sketch is no longer around. But fear not! Coming to fill the gap in your webcam-enabled-misuses-of-advanced-robotic-technology life is the excellent web-enabled magic 8 ball! Now, everyone knows about those little random-seed programs that act like magic 8-balls, but no... this is a real magic 8-ball, in a Lego Mindstorms robotic "shaking cradle", and hooked under a webcam. Oh yes. And in case you saw that episode of Sex and the City as well, and you too were wondering what manner of perversion she meant when she said he "spooned" her, I have found an explanation of what spooning is. Hint: it's not nearly as kinky as you think.

Hilarious. As reported by Slashdot and Wired, KPMG says you cannot -- must not -- link to its site. Funny, it doesn't seem that hard. The site which stirred this up also contained a copy of their theme song mirrored (on the second page of the Wired article) which is just really funny. Who writes this crap? How did the singer keep a straight face?

Yay for Darren's 21st birthday party! Talking, dancing, drinking, puking and much merriness, culminating in significant property damage! That's the way parties should be. Incidentally, the property damage was complete unrelated to the party... a sink in very highest bedroom somehow managed to burst its pipe, sending a fountain of water into the air and flooding the room, then running through the floor to the ceiling below, then through the floor of that room down to the ceiling of the ground floor. Pretty impressive, especially when we couldn't find the main water supply for the house to turn it off. I feel sorry for the housemates of course, but hopefully in a few weeks they'll appreciate how hilarious it sounds :-)

This is worth mentioning: Google Groups (the web-based USENET service from Google) has now expanded its archive to document my entire life. Yep, with 700 million usenet messages since May 3, 1981, the archive now starts before I was born and thereby documents every major event of my lifetime in the form of a digital, searchable discussion between large groups of clueless people. That sounds dumb, but think it's fantastically cool that the important events (or what seemed important at the time) of every day of my life are now online. The announcement contains links to a bunch of more significant events of more interest :-)

Get 'em while they're hot! Your number one site for Anna Kournikova bestiality pics (scroll down. And if it's more than a week since I posted this, the site will probably have been updated, so check the archives. But it's there.) Buwahahaha.

Asperger's Syndrome and autism are rising sharply in Silicon Valley because the same genes that make you good at maths and other abstract disciplines such as programming are the same ones that, in greater numbers, give you autism. The description of Asperger's is very interesting; sound like anyone you know? The reason given for the rise is that mildly autistic parents who make superb engineers are meeting, marrying, concentrating the genes and passing them on to their children. I was already planning to write an article which touched on this, look for it soon...

Merry Christmas eve! I probably won't post for a while, so I should get this in now. No year-behind-me or year-ahead-of-me tripe to be found.

The Info Service (your guess is as good as mine) maintains this really quite fabulous index of random generator pages, including such gems as the Arabian Insults generator, the Gerry Springer Show constructor, and the Seinfeld-o-matic, among dozens. We like. A new way of arranging the pixels in a monitor produces cheaper monitors with four times the resolution of conventional monitors of the same size. Quite a cool idea; a genuine innovation. Proprietary, unfortunately... but I might be willing to pay a bit more for a monitor with 4 times the resolution, to be honest. You'll notice there are still no looks-at-the-past-year or looks-at-the-year-ahead, no predictions for 2002 and no new year's resolutions. I have better things to do, to be honest, and my year wasn't very interesting and my predictions are going to be wrong. I'll tell you what my resolutions for 2002 are on December 31st, 2002, so I can make them realistic.
