Why I really, really hate Instagram
Update 2012-01-09: OMG you guys, stop linking to this already! The new versions of Instagram save the un-filtered versions by default, and the new filters are in any case a lot more subtle than the first version. Instagram no longer destroys data, so I no longer hate it. Please stop sending me flame emails.
I love data, so I really hate Instagram.
I suppose it would be more accurate to say I really hate the users of Instagram, for what they do to their photos; Instagram is merely the enabler. The behaviour I take issue with isn't even the default behaviour of the app. But I'm uncomfortable applying such a strong word to such a large group of people who are mostly just trying to be cute and aren't considering the larger consequences of their collective action. So instead I hate Instagram, for enabling the senseless destruction of data contained in these photos.
Consider the digital camera on a mobile phone. Even on high-end mobile phones, it is already a pathetically inaccurate instrument. Even a moderate-quality film camera has a resolution of between 12 and 20 megapixels. The iPhone 4 has 5 megapixels on the rear camera, and high-end Android phones like the EVO 4G go as high as 8.
As a society, we have already made a collective sacrifice in photo quality in the name of quantity and convenience. There was a dark period in the late 90s when average photo quality plummeted from the 20 megapixels of film to pathetic VGA, 640x480 (0.3MP) photos. But it climbed, and now your average point-and-shoot has 12MP, roughly film quality. But in the meantime we sacrificed quality again, this time in the name of portability, and we rely mostly on the cameras in our phones.
With these rubbish phone cameras we take terrible photos of some of our most important moments and cherished memories. I am not complaining about composition and lighting here; I'm not a photographer. I am talking about the quantity of meaningful visual data contained in these files. Future historians will decry forever the appalling lack of visual fidelity in the historical record of the last decade.
Enter Instagram
The mobile app Instagram is -- though this intentionally non-obvious to users -- at heart a social networking play. It's drop-dead simple, it connects you to your friends, and it provides a way of sharing content with your friends that keeps you coming back to the app. It is brilliant. It's slickly built, cleverly marketed, and a masterpiece of usability and clean, get-out-of-the-way design.
The ultimate triumph of its subtly minimalist design is that users get involved without realizing this is what it is. Instead, what most users think of it as is "that way to take cute photos that look like a polaroid from the 1970s". That's what the icon looks like, that's what the name says, and that's the feature it has over all other camera apps: it has a set of filters that can make your otherwise standard cellphone photo look like it was shot with one of a variety of vintage cameras. Again, brilliant.
But also terrible. Think about what these filters are doing: they're taking the already horribly limited amount of visual data contained in a cellphone snapshot and destroying it. If you take a photo with a filter, your original photo -- the one with all the data you originally captured -- is lost. Instead, what is sent to your friends and saved to your photo library is a copy of the photo where a layer of junk has been applied. Colours are washed out, contrast destroyed, borders are cropped, blurs and scratches applied. The meaningful, unique information in those pixels is gone forever, replaced with cloned copies of the bits in the filter file. You are fucking up your photo.
I don't care how terrible your cellphone camera is. I don't care if the shot was already blurry, or badly lit. However bad it was, you have just made it worse. And the worst part is why people do this: because they want that "vintage" look.
Why the fuck do you need your digital photos to look vintage? You are not decorating the set of some 1970s version of Mad Men. You are not fooling anybody into thinking you are taking polaroids and scanning them before uploading them to twitter. People take these fucking faux-vintage shots of current events, things that happened five minutes ago. They add filters to screenshots of their mobile operating system, as if they have some cherished memory from 10 years before they were born of using a mobile operating system that wasn't invented until 40 years after that.
The reason they do this is because of faux-nostalgia. People, and in particular brand marketers, have associated good times with the past, and "vintage" things -- wine, clothes, cars -- with higher quality. So if your photo looks vintage, thanks to the collective marketing efforts of five or six different industries all trying to sell you old shit at 10x its production cost, you feel it looks like a better photo. There's also artificially altered expectations: it may be a terrible cellphone picture but it's great for a polaroid.
I have had enough. Stop fucking up your photos. You know what's going to look actually vintage? The original photo. Go back in your hard drive and look at photos you took with your cellphone 5 years ago. They already look ancient, with their 800x600 resolution. In 5 years your 5-megapixel iPhone 4 shots are going to look just as hokey. You do not need to fuck with these photos to make them look old. You do not need to dip them in artificial 70s-dust to add nostalgic charm to them.
These are already the best photos you'll ever take. They are taken in the moment, of spontaneous laughter and stupid adventures, of your best friends at high school and at college and afterwards. They record good times and solemn occasions, nights out and birthday parties and great meals and first dates. It doesn't matter if they're blurry or dark or out of focus. In forty years' time you're going to look back at these photos and love them no matter what. And you'll wonder why the fuck you thought wrapping a white border and splashing a pink blob over them was a good idea.
It breaks my data-loving heart. So much is going to happen to these photos. Hard drive crashes, virus infections, lost laptops, accidental deletions, misplaced files. It's going to be really hard for them to survive the next three decades. Why destroy them before they even start on their journey?
Stop deliberately destroying your own memories. Stop using the filters on Instagram.
If you like citation-free rants like this one you should follow me on Twitter here.
Update: Multiple people have pointed out that you can set Instagram to save a copy of the original photo. As I point out right at the beginning, this is not a problem with Instagram by itself, but with the users of Instagram, and Instagram as the enabler. (However, saving the original photo untouched in not the default setting)

Serriously though dude it's like you care so much about what other people are doing.. step off, mind your own. If you don't like poor quality pictures or messing with pics with filters then don't use the app.... it's so terrifingly simple.
Laura
BTW, I found this blog while doing a search looking for more Instagram filters. I think it's a neat program if used sparingly and creatively.
Libby
I have to say I dont really agree with you on this one, its not just about making photos look cute and all vintage, its just making a photo look the best that it can be, as long as you have the original who cares...
But hey each to their own, im guessing you dont use Instagram any more? :)
Happy snapping

In regards to degrading the image further with filters, yes on a very technical level that's true, though it rarely produces anything other than a better looking, more interesting image. It really depends on which filter you use and how you chose to use it. There's so many apps out there now providing filters and effects, which most Instagrammers use instead of the filters provided within the app. My Instagram stream created by the people I follow is filled with creative and unusual images that couldn't have been created any other way and that are, in my opinion, much better than rubbish dull unedited mobile phone pictures. What Instagram has actually done is create a new genre of photography - a lot of people call it iPhonography. Contrary to popular belief it does actually take a degree of skill and creativity to do it well.
I am perplexed that you say you're not a photographer but have such a point of view about this. Why do you care?

P.S. You can make anything sound stupid by calling it cute. You can also make yourself sound pompous by doing so.
Luke
The filters just make shit photo's look half decent for kicks. It's not really about being overly artistic. And if that is taking something from those who spent years defining the original craft well....then I guess that's just a sign of the times. Technology moved forward to enable everyone to have some fun with it easily. How you can have such a gripe about a bit of fun and care so much about peoples photos other than your own I don't quite understand.

Megapixels have nothing to do with image quality. A low megapixel DSLR will outperform a high megapixel DSLR of the same sensor size in low light. Squeezing megapixels onto a sensor will increase image physical size, not quality; what it will do though is add artifacts and noise.

I did find that Instagram worked better in a low/bad data connection than trying to upload photos w/ Hootsuite or Facebook directly. And I have also found that I am getting MORE creative by using this app than I was before. So I'll take the good w/ the bad. The only complaint I have is that the Exif data gets stripped, that's a bummer.

Your obviously a little young to realize how immature your post is, maybe in a couple of years you will have thought a little more before posting absolute crap on a subject you clearly have little knowledge on.
It's little blogs like this that annoy me because it's spreads such crap.
With views like this there is no way I would even seek the services of awe.sm the company you co-founded. I would hate to think what your doing with peoples data.

Your not a photographer? I can tell. I am. Ever since i got my hands on instagram i've used my DSLR less and less.
Allan W.
I've been shooting for 25 years from the darkroom to digital. You'll see at my link I shoot professionally. There's a place for "perfect" photos. But I adore the stylized snaps from Instagram and other apps. I don't care if they're low-res. I like the limited options when I'm on the go. They're some of my absolute faves. I don't mind that they're small. When I want big and perfect (and oodles of metadata) I'll shoot that and lug my DSLR and big glass along. Look at my instagram snaps and tell me my images aren't good:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/whitespace/tags/uploaded%3Aby%3Dinstagram/
People love memories, not data. Data is just data - it only has value if people care about it.
Allan W.
"Senseless destruction of data"... LOL! It's not baby seals, people.
Natalie
I don't lose any data because I take pictures with my normal camera and then run them through Instagram, because I lose some of the functionality through Instagram's camera (the auto-focus, if I remember correctly).
You say that Instagram always makes photos more difficult to decipher. I've had the opposite experience. Some of the filters make my nighttime photos lighter, which actually makes them easier to read. And you would hate this, but there's a fake focus tool that's can be helpful if you want to blur out compromising information.
Lastly, the primary use of Instagram is to spice up boring photos. It's a social networking device, so usually the things you'll see on there are gratuitous self-portraits or pictures of meals that no one cares about. Everybody does it, it's fine. But I also don't mind people trying to make those pictures a little prettier.
The only argument with merit is against faux-nostalgia, and that's completely subjective. I'll probably be embarrassed by all these phony colours in five years, but I don't really care, because I'm having fun now. Plenty of people will overuse it, but I think some people will always find ways to be tacky. More power to them, if they're having fun too.
Geraldine
People here don't realise that in 20 years the pictures we can take with our digital cameras will be altered with "fake" vintage looks that didn't even came out of the real thing.
Justin
If you apply a filter, you don't "destroy" the data, you are modifying it (depending on the filter possibly in a non-recoverable way, but it's a modification nonetheless). The question is, is the raw image "better" than the filtered one? Photos are not just about capturing "data", i.e. an objective representation of some moment in time (if that even exists??). They are also about expression.
Long before the appearance of instagram photographers have been using (real) filters, playing with lighting, composition, etc. Are you saying they have also destroyed their photos?
All instagram does is offer the user a greater degree of freedom when choosing the final visual aesthetic of their photo. True, the fact that you just applied a predefined filter doesn't make you an artist, but if it helps you better express the idea/emotion/moment/feeling captured in the image, then it's enabling you, not the other way around.
Speaking of preserving data, another side-effect of instagram is that people will upload more of their photos to the web. This in turn means there's a much greater chance these photos will survive precisely the calamities you mentioned earlier such as viruses or lost laptops, especially as regularly backing up up your data is still not common practice amongst most users.
In conclusion...
If I want to apply a filter that makes a photo of my flatmate playing his PS3 look more 70's, I'll do it whether you like it or not. Maybe it's because I want to express the contrast between the visual aesthetics of previous generations and modern life. Maybe it's because I want the photo to blend in with the rest of the photos in my grandparents' family album. Or maybe it's just because I like the way it looks. 40 years from now, it will remind me of that time I used instagram, I had a flatmate, a PS3, and was attracted to fake-1970's aesthetics. Or maybe not. But I'm sure I'll like it just as much as the grainy 800x600 pixelated and poorly lit photo I would have had if I hadn't lost my iPhone a month later before I remembered to backup my photos.
owen-b
The only good camera is the one you have with you. The only good photo is the one you took for your own personal reasons. And the only person who really needs to like that photo, is the person who took it.

You can. Use the settings app.

But to many people, the unedited version is just too plain and dull...
Honestly, time has changed... I'm not saying that your blog is incorrect or inaccurate, but the majority that I've met, using DSLRs, photoshops, etc, but they know nuts about ISO, aperture, SS, etc...
People only believe in what they want to believe... Hear only the things they want to hear... So, do consider joining the fun, for the sake of the joy in photography, not for some expectations that people should appreciate a set of unedited photos, compare to some random candid shots with alterations...
Live life cool~
Life is not about how good you are at photography... It is about, how good you are at selling it...

Like the Brownie of yesteryear, mobile phones are used to take snapshots. I would totally agree with you if someone whipped out their iPhone to take the official wedding pictures, but a day at the zoo or seaside is just what this sort of fun photography is designed for.

The fact that you write such a long winded gripe at people who are member of this community sums up exactly why you would never quite understand it in the first place! If you don't like something don't fukin use it. Why not moan at Facebook and it salad of virtual friends and drull comments ect etc.
Why do people like me use instagram? Because we do, so butt the out, jeeeze! In terms of 'fucking up a photo' it seems clear to me you would'nt know a good photo if it came up behind you and slapped you in the arse! Go punch a wall or something man, you got anger management issues, lol!

I dont care what the blogger has to say about data changing apps. The photos do look vintage and its a cool app to have some fun with your photos. What annoys me de most is that all blogs, social media and photo sites are now flooded with Polaroid looking photos. Also the problem is now that everyone thinks they can take good photos. What is mentioned by others as well is that people forget about exposure, composition, DOF, etc, all that stuff that makes a real good photo.
I got on the band wagon there for a second a short while back, and made one of my photos look vintage using Lightroom. And then I realised it looked like all the other sheit on the internet. So I am staying away from the craze and just use my skills to come up with a good photograph instead of a mobile phone originating over-processed poor quality image.
What funny is that people get deluded now as well as to what is a good photo. I was supposed to take photos of a mate of mine and his band. When I asked him when it was a good time he said that the guitarist's girlfriend would take photos coz she really shoots great photos. Yes, taken with Hipstamatic on an iPhone. Shaking my head. If that's the photos you want to go with as a band, be my guest, but I doubt it if you will be taken serious.
Since when did Polaroid looking photos become the standard?
HerpDerp?
Be logical. Instagram is not the be-all, and end-all of photography. No matter who takes what with a mobile phone, and instagrams it (Yes, you can keep the original picture, too.)
In the end, instagrams will not measure up to photography of a real photographer with quality gear. There is so much more to good photography.
Instagram is just for cutes, and kicks.
Don't be angry and flame just because people have found themselves a hobby. Just get a better hobby rather than crying about it.

This is possibly the most naive, pointless post I have ever read on line. It is difficult to see the perspective you are coming from. I have been using an SLR camera for years and appreciate it's quality. Yet, recently when I discovered Tadaa, which is similar to Instagram, I was amazed at how fun and engaging it is to be able to take a photo, quickly edit it and effortlessly upload it for thousands to see.
It's about sharing your moments almost instantaneously, whilst also being able to share your older photos taken by whichever means you like. Some of the photos I have seen on Tadaa are of very high quality and taken by professionals.
On the other hand, most Instagram/Tadaa users will be viewing others' photos on their phones too, so if the ones taken and filtered on your own phone look great, they will look great on everyone else's too.
I think you need consider more carefully why you are getting annoyed about something, and whether anyone is actually going to care about you being annoyed about it, before you waste your time writing such a tirade!!! I hope I haven't wasted my time in trying to enlighten you on the wonders of the digital age ;)

instagram ruins whatever image you have captured with crazy filters, and after sometime, all those images lose their fancy and they are "so" yesterday's. so you need more filters and you have the latest fad around. 10 years down the line, you cannot reclaim your original image, but stuck with that yesterday's set of filters. ouch!

Chill.
You're right, this may be a complaint that a future anthropologist might have. But they get along fine with previous generations who didn't carry multiple imaging and recording devices. Additionally, the number of skilled photographers has actually increased, even if the noise floor has risen. That means we only have more, better recordings of life (if that is important to you). In fact, thanks to recent CMOS sensors, we are photographing things that we couldn't before - in fact, we are photography handheld at light levels where we can't see. And that noise floor - the pictures, not the "photographs" well, it has been there from the advent of handheld photography. Kodak introduced the slogan "You press the button, we do the rest" in 1888.
1888.
That's how old the instagram concept is. Leave people alone. You want to attack them for calling themselves photographers, ok, maybe. But that's a different subject.
If you really want to feel better about it, think of it this way (and I don't think that I do): if these trivial people are making such hackney, data poor records of their lives, then history will forget them.
So there you go, I've solved your problem, past, present, and future. Breathe.

Then you get chumps who can buy recording software and think they're an engineer. The modernisation of media is what's causing all this, not people who use a mobile phone app. We are encouraged, nay entranced, by new technology.
People are taking subaverage photos; that's been going on a lot longer than you think. Yeah, I use instagram. I use Hipstamatic. I also take pictures with the normal camera. I do, however, realise if I want GOOD photos I have to invest in an SLR.

This is what I can conclude from so far. Or at least, your reaction is.
From what I have read, you dislike Instagram not only because it has gone viral within its first year of existence, but because it encourages and enables people to take 'vintage-like' pictures, which you claim are merely low-resolution or low quality pictures, which are further destroyed because of the filters on Instagram.
I can agree with you on the fact that not all the filters on Instagram are of a standard I would hope for, or of a quality I would prefer. But please look further into what has grown from a mere photo-sharing app on the iPhone to a global community which has connected so many much people to each other.
Anyway, not everyone on Instagram wants to use it because they feel it's "vintage" or "old-school". Myopic, like I said earlier. You generalised everyone on Instagram because of its filters, but fail to realise that a good number of its users don't even use filters to begin with. You can check statigr.am for more stats on that.

actually, i just wanna share that i love my original photos and toying around with them on instagram isn't so bad AS LONG AS i still have my original photo.
that's why i never take pictures with instagram. i take pictures with the real camera app, then apply instagram filters.
i can filter all i want because i have the original photo which I WILL NEVER DELETE.
if i delete the original photo and keep the filtered one, i'll then be limited to that effect only. but if i have an original photo, i can recreate countless of photos with different effects.
so i guess i'm not against instagram. but the thought of not caring about original "raw" photos is what makes me cringe.
filter all you want, just don't lose the original.

you are right and wrong
No, that isn't the argument that it is wrong. You fucking moron.
People take pictures that use filters in the real world. People deliberately reduce the light in a scene, in the real world. People cover up people's faces, deliberately, in the real world. This is all a form of reducing certain information.
What your fucking retarded (and this is where it jumps from me being polite and reasoned, to wanting you to know how stupid you are) mind is missing is - what instagram adds to the photo. That vignette - yes you camera might add one because of inadvertent shadows on the censor, but it makes it what people want, and lets them be prolific and create what the shit they want.
Yes, people are going to have to realise that these photos are different to other types of photos, but our own fucking memories or sepia tainted reconstructions of associations to an event.
This, the sheer gap in your knowledge, masquerading as an all-knowing tirade of self-involved brilliance is why people are flaming back (not that they would know that).

Well stop fucking using the fucking word fuck to fucking abuse instagram users (and the rest of the fucking planet's population come to think of it) because they fucking happen not to be so fucking anal as you. You fucked up anemic pre-pubescent dicksplash. Does your mother know you are using the web unsupervised?
p.s. Don't take offense, normally I am very polite but I am just adopting the abusive tone of your post :)

I bet you suck at photography.
Instagram is fun and easy.
It's perfect for creating beautiful photos.
I'll have you know that editing photos is a skill that many find difficult.
Thank You.

You are not pro photographers like me, so you have no right to complain about the OPs opinions! You should all STOP using Instagram NOW before you kill photography and all that is great in the world!!
Laurie should be listened to he is so cute! Instagram is killing photography, what will our children's children say, probably 'What WERE they thinking?'
PS: And not a single fucking expletive!

But, it's the trendy, hipster thing to do, without finding an old Brownie and actually learning how to take pictures.

A classic case of someone that doesn't know their arse from their elbow but has an opinion about it anyway.
20 megapixels from film? Get fucking real. The vast majority of photos taken in the latter half of the 20th century were snapshots recorded using very cheap cameras with shite lenses, often using poxy formats like 110 and Kodak Disc. Even 6x4s looked rubbish!
I'll wager most people (of a certain age) have a box stored somewhere of these 'shit' photos and I'm sure their paucity doesn't bother them one bit.
Flickr houses millions of uber-megapixel images, many of which are beautifully crafted. Guess what? They aint worth shit because there are THOUSANDS of near-identical photos available at the click of a Google search button.
And I'm sure that most Instagram users know that it's easy enough to non-destructively edit a pic stored in their phone.
Stick to computers - you know jack-shit about photography!

People can make what they call "good" photos in the blink of an eye. If you like making Polaroid-esque images but you hate that anyone anywhere can now do it with the press of a button, then, find something or find a way to do it that's still challenging, something where you can experiment and still push yourself creatively, because there's more to photography than just filters.

Instagram is a social network of people sharing photos. I don't think anyone with a Iphone is going to say "I'm a professional photographer" when they just have an iphone and the fact is people were taking cellphone pictures before instagram showed. Need I remind everyone it isn't always about the tools of the trade either but the person using it. A photographer could have a expensive camera and take crap photos verse someone with a cheaper camera who knew what they were doing. The point of instagram is to take pictures and it doesn't matter if you know the technicality of it.
If someone likes the filters on Instagram they will use it on the picture. If you don't like it don't use it. I've used them before they arn't suppose to be a break through or anything fancy. I don't understand what point is trying to be made against it. Photography to me is art so if someone wants there photo to look vintage and pixelly and they don't care then go for it. It is all visual, who cares about the pixels and data. If someone doesn't care about that then good for them and you don't have to use it.
You don't have to use Instagram. At the end of the day is a social app which I and many others will enjoy and at the end of the day its about sharing small moments with the people around you. I could care less about the data that is being destroyed.

Aside from that little blip in your entire rant, why is it of importance to you what people decide to do with their own pictures? If you want to leave your photos intact, I'm not going to comment on it and say how much I "fucking hate it" BECAUSE THEY ARE YOURS.
I like the OPTION of fucking around with my pictures. If I take a particularly dark photo, Instagram offers the ability to lighten the image, showing features that would've been hidden had I not used one of the filters. And honestly, come 20 years from now I may never see these pictures again. It's not the reason people are even doing this. It's for the social aspect of it, like you said earlier in your post. It's to stay connected, it's to have fun and be involved in the creative process. Any app or gadget that allows the user to enhance their photos, in my opinion, is great.
I just strongly disagree with your point of view and harsh language towards the entire Instagram community. Clumping everyone into one category of "you all do this because you want the vintage feel, bla bla bla" is weak.

If you take photos with Instagram, you're stupid. I take iPhone photos and just upload whatever I want in IG. That way, I preserve the original. So I don't know what you're complaining about. Even so....if the user prefer it that way, so be it.
After all, it's art. There are no right or wrong ways. If one is able to express well through IG, then one has succeeded.
There are good nerds. And there are bad nerds. You're the bad kind.

You want something to look like Polaroid? Go buy a polaroid camera and film. It's not that difficult. Don't use some awful app and call yourself a "photographer" again, or I'll punch you in the mouth.
Long story short; Instagram and its users infuriate me.

The point of this app is to show others our work and get feed back and support, to enjoy what you do and give insight into a persons personality, if you don't like the use of filters don't use them, if you don't like other peoples work , don't follow them, instagram is about finding people who share the same love of photography as you, it doesn't matter what camera you use or if you use filter or not its about ENJOYING THE LOVE OF PHOTOGRAPHY.
So don't be an arrogant prick and generalize all instagram users as lazy , sure some of us take the random phone picture of a view or something we are doing, but we dont all only take Shitty phone pictures.

What you were disdaining is people's artistic desire to tamper with the experiences they share in order to convey extra ideas. You sound a lot like the old art establishment's reaction to impressionism and the rest of modern art, so much so that it's pretty funny. You write well but you're an idiot.
