In the face of the evidence
Aaaaaaah! Someone stop the crazy men!
Months of evidence given, more than 1000 people interviewed, and a panel of commissioners conclude that there was no link between Iraq and 9-11. Meanwhile, Cheney and Bush continue to imply that there was, playing semantic games. Quoth Dubya:
The reason I keep insisting that there was a relationship between Iraq and Saddam and al Qaeda, because there was a relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda
Quoth the commission's report:
[Osama Bin Laden] explored possible cooperation with Iraq during his time in Sudan, despite his opposition to Hussein's secular regime. ... There have been reports that contacts between Iraq and al Qaeda also occurred after bin Laden had returned to Afghanistan, but they do not appear to have resulted in a collaborative relationship.
The key thing to note here is that "contact" in Bush-speak constitutes a "relationship", whereas in everyone else's book it implies collaboration. You could argue it in court, but coming from a President that's pretty fucking low.
Ever ready to further lower the bar, however, is Vice-President Cheney. Lifted shamelessly from CNN, the scumbag said:
Asked if Iraq was involved in 9/11, he said, "We don't know."PROBABLY?! Why the fuck is that probable, numbnut?! If you have all this information about a clear link, why the fuck didn't you give to the fucking commission whose fucking job it was to find out if there was a link? Do you just have a chronic aversion to letting people know the truth? Or are you just a lying weasel, trying to bluff your way out of your exposed lies with more lies about some fake evidence that doesn't exist? Is this really what we want from the man in charge of the world's most powerful nation?"What the commission says is they can't find evidence of that," he said. "We had one report, which is a famous report on the Czech intelligence service, and we've never been able to confirm or to knock it down."
The uncorroborated Czech report, which has been widely disputed, alleged that 9/11 ringleader Mohammed Atta met with an Iraqi intelligence agent in Prague before the attacks.
Asked if he knows information that the 9/11 commission does not know, Cheney replied, "Probably."
I can't decide whether this makes me more angry than scared, or more scared than angry.
