The Year in Blog
I was going to write a year-end review, but I realised: I have absolutely no memory; I can't remember what I did last week, so how can I write a review of 12 months? Luckily, I blog most everything important that happens to me. So this year's review will be produced mainly by referring to earlier blog entries. I wrote 256 entries entries this year -- roughly one every 33 hours -- so it's pretty comprehensive coverage, and my most active year for blogging yet (by about 30 entries over 2003). It's not quite the one entry per day I resolved to do, but hey, it's 72% of that goal, which makes it a first-class effort.
January
- It started out bad, with everyone still reeling from the tsunami
- I made my resolutions, and kept none of them. But man's reach must exceed his grasp, I'm sure.
- I comprehensively photoblogged my vacation in Trinidad
- I also reviewed 2004, half-heartedly.
February
- Met American Boy J. He's back in the US now, but I promise he's very memorable.
- Also in the above post, I realised that my joke-stalking of Tom Coates was turning into real stalking, and so stopped. But apparently too late to convince anybody :-)
- I predicted that the US will attack Iran. I'm sticking by this one.
- I moved to Finsbury Park. It looks like it'll be only a year I stay here, though -- I'm currently house-hunting in South London.
- I liked my extended analogy for software development
- I also wrote about why time seems to go faster as you get older
- The infamous six week graph of desperation made its appearance and has been constantly mentioned by my friends since
- I got permission to host two tracks by Gabi and the Whoremoans. At least, I was told I did. It turned out I didn't, but then I got it in the end anyway.
March
- I nearly killed myself at the gym. But in a funny way.
- I complained about design flaws in CSS (CSS3 addresses them, mainly).
- I gave advice for gay men thinking of moving to London
- I went to the dogs at Walthamstow Stadium. Still in my top-5 worst nights out ever.
- I got very excited about the new series of Doctor Who
- First mention of AJAX on this blog.
- I released what I've done so far on web2. I have a whole lot more unreleased stuff since then.
April
- I worried that I may be addicted to information for its own sake
- The Pope died.
- I raved about Buttoned Down Disco
- I decide that shopping for music in meatspace is totally impractical
- I dispelled myths about the beauty of the English countryside
- I got really excited about web development, all over again
- There was an election. Labour won, though I didn't mention that anywhere...
- I went to the Grenadines. It was very pretty.
- My dad turned 60, to the tune of Santimanitay.
May
- I got pensive about laughter
- I blogged from the dinner table
- I wrote about why the changes to OUTintheUK were such a terrible idea, and rapidly switched to ThingBox, where I've been very happy since
- I applauded the absorption and adoption of blogs by mainstream media
- I dreamed about being unable to have sex because I couldn't find a condom. Safe-sex truly is burned into my subconscious.
June
- I entered Dom's orgasm-illustration contest (and won).
- I got very annoyed with Bob Geldof, while the rest of the nation wore their white bracelets to Live 8 and felt better about poverty for no reason
- I pointed out that Doctor Who nicked their final episode plotline from X-Men, but enjoyed it anyway
- I railed against software patents
- I provided assistance with vocabulary
- There were a lot of barbecues
July
- Everything went crazy as suicide bombers hit too close to home for anyone's liking. Unlike stoic Brits, I showed my immigrant colours by reacting with sheer and abject terror, although I calmed down quite quickly and decided to take positive action to do more with my life in case I got bombed again.
- I interviewed a friend of mine who is a young Muslim male about the motivations behind the bombings, and got some very important answers: in particular, that it was definitely going to happen again. I finally got some perspective on the bombings.
- Five days later, the bombs went off again. My reaction the second time around was not fear but intense anger, debilitatingly intense. Luckily my period of desperately wanting to punch through walls faded after about a week.
- Boltblue had its summer party.
August
- I compiled my big list of eighteen totally inappropriate speeches in which George W. Bush has used the phrase "hate freedom", including Hispanic education, tax relief, the cattle industry, and physical fitness for senior citizens.
- Planet Afterlife shifted to its new home
- I was surprised to learn that I used a word totally unknown in Britain to describe lower-case letters
- Scientology had a well-deserved roasting
- Republicans are the jock party, I discovered
- I discovered that hate crimes can be used an excuse to get out of anything
- I did a lot of cooking
September
- I haphazardly compared US and UK healthcare systems
- And got extremely angry about New Orleans (mainly in the linklog, though -- need to archive those babies).
- I received a wonderful guide to London in the 1930s for my birthday, amongst other things
- My iPod got upgraded to a 60GB colour version. Yes, that is a momentous event in my year, okay?
- I whined about people who keep asking me to try alcohol
- M and I did a whirlwind trip to New York City and had a great time. I've done quite a lot of travelling this year, by my standards.
October
- I landed the dream job at Yahoo!. Still pleased about that one, folks. I didn't tell the full story until the following month.
- I analyzed tube ads, mainly as a result of having a new phone.
- Housemates T and J DJ'ed at Popstarz for the first time, to great excitement, but just a week later were under a cloud from the untimely passing of Simon Hobart, promoter and friend. However, his clubs continue to thrive as non-profit engines for charity.
- Mr Sulu came out, which interested me more than was probably cool
November
- First recorded instance of comedy gold
- I descended further into geekery, to the surprise of everyone who though I could go no further
- The Afterlife lot had a barnstormer of an argument about banning smoking, which was most enjoyable.
- I came out at work, through the simple method of posting about whether I should come out at work, and my co-workers read this blog
December
- I decided that the war on terror is the long tail of conflict, and discover that several clever people agree with me.
- Baby pandas are cute
- Yahoo! had its Christmas party
- Southern England got covered in smoke
- And I went home for the holidays.
Two bombings down but two great vacations and a new job up. It's been a pretty good year.
