My computer Anton was overheating and crashing constantly. After trying unplugging, removing the case, vacuuming, and yelling, I finally removed the fan to find a solid dust blockage. Cleaned it out, CPU dropped 20 degrees. Lesson: maintain your hardware. Yelling does nothing.
Sick for two days and feeling worse, not better. Managed to get X working on Debian, which is progress, but compiling wireless drivers is a nightmare.
Drowning in a high-stakes project that may literally kill me, and spending my remaining energy trying to get Linux running on an ancient 366MHz laptop. Ubuntu and SuSE both crapped out. Geeks, I need distro recommendations for low-spec hardware. Save me.
Selling my Wacom graphics tablet on eBay. Upgrading to a better one for my birthday.
Flat panel CRTs from IBM match LCD prices without the manufacturing headaches. Interesting, though I'm still holding out for flexible screens.
Sat in on a great Intel lecture about chip architecture. Now wondering if the Itanium/AMD split could balkanize computing the way Mac vs. Windows did, but with incompatible hardware too. Could be a nightmare for porting, and interesting times for Linux either way.
Xbox crashed during a demo, flashing a very PC-like boot screen for all to see. Funny stuff.
Back in London for the weekend. Amusing links: Microsoft tech support vs. Psychic Friends (psychics win on price and friendliness), IBM's self-healing networks, transparent PC cases, Maryland blocking Microsoft Passport, a terabyte stored in glass, and a keyless keyboard. Also, Black and White's gesture interface is getting well-deserved attention.
Polymer displays are finally real, and they're better than LCDs in every way. The market's exploding from $3M to $2.7B by 2005. Watch Kodak and Cambridge Display Technologies.
