Warwick students voted to ban smoking in their union. Selfish? Sure, but so is forcing non-smokers to breathe your fumes. Democracy runs on selfishness. Hurrah for the smoke-free majority. We non-smokers just need to wait for our numbers to grow -- which won't take long.

Beijing just jumped from 37 to 402 SARS cases. China's massive, the disease is spreading far from Hong Kong, mortality is climbing past 9%, and it can spread through water and waste. I'm not leaving my house for the foreseeable future.

Africa's AIDS crisis is devastating, but I found two surprising bright spots: infection rates across the continent appear to be stabilizing, and some people are genuinely immune to HIV. That 1% genetic immunity in caucasians makes a compelling case for genetic engineering. Small comfort, but I'll take it.

A sobering look at global HIV/AIDS statistics for World AIDS Day. 28 million infected in sub-Saharan Africa alone, 2.8 million dying this year. An easily preventable disease infecting 6 per 1000 people worldwide. Just stupid and depressing.
